FiOS Internet

Imagine downloading at 50 Mbps. It's now possible with Verizon FiOS! That's 913 times faster than 56k dialup! In addition the upload speed is up to 10 Mbps which is 6X faster than a dedicated T1 line that corporations pay up to $1000 per month for.

The speeds available vary from market to market, so check with Verizon to get the actual speeds and pricing for your area. The typical FiOS speed packages look like this:

UPDATE 9/19/2007:The connection speeds have increased in most areas. The starting package download speed is now 10Mbps. The prices have not changed!

UPDATE 12/9/2007:A new symmetrical plan has been added with super fast upload speeds.

FiOS vs Cable:

When you compare FiOS to cable, FiOS has a huge advantage. Companies like Comcast better prepare because once Verizon brings FiOS into an existing market dominated by the cable companies, the cable companies will lose market share. The speeds are faster in almost all cases. The prices are lower in almost all cases. The reliability will also likely be better in almost all cases. Laser pulses over fiber optics cables can travel much farther than electric signals over copper wiring without needed to go through a repeater or amplifying device. This equates to lower latency and again a faster internet connection regardelss of the bandwidth limits.

*Comparisons to cable are according to ConsumerFiber.com and do not necessarily represent the views of Verizon.

Firmware Updates:

Currently there are two different routers provided by Verizon for FiOS. One is made by D-Link (DI-604 or DI-624), the other is made by ActionTec (MI-424WR). From time to time a firmware update may be available for the router, and it is usually a good idea to upgrade the firmware to help prevent any issues from arising.
